Retirement income you can't outlive

Saving was the first half of the job. The second half is turning what you have saved into income that lasts, and keeping more of it.

The challenge

People are living longer, markets do not move in straight lines, and every dollar drawn from a 401(k) or IRA is taxed as income. Draw too much in a bad year and the damage is permanent. Draw too little and you never enjoy what you saved.

The strategy

Create a base of income that is guaranteed for life, so market swings stop dictating your lifestyle, and draw the rest from sources that give you more say over when, and whether, tax is due.

How it works

The tools include annuities, contracts with an insurance company that can pay income you cannot outlive and grow tax-deferred until you take it, alongside Roth accounts and, for many clients, loans from a family bank policy.

Annuities can be fixed, indexed or variable, immediate or deferred, and they differ greatly in cost and flexibility. We compare your options side by side, including the costs most people are never shown.

Good to know

Guarantees are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company. Variable annuities are subject to market risk, including loss of principal. Withdrawals may be subject to surrender charges and, before age 59½, a tax penalty.
